ABSTRACT

An 81-year-old woman, long-term non-progressor HIV infected, asymptomatic, not using ART, with a seven-year clinical follow-up in a reference unit, TCD4+ cell count values ranged from 719 to 1151 cells/µl, TCD8+ from 579 to 897 cells/µl and a viral load with higher value of 51 viral copies/ml but with undetectable results in most of the tests performed. The report of the long-term non-progressor HIV carrier aged over 80 years is somewhat unusual, considering the physiological/immunological changes that occur with the aging process concomitantly with HIV infection.


Mulher de 81 anos, infectada pelo HIV há muito tempo, não progressor, assintomática, sem uso de TARV, com acompanhamento clínico de sete anos em unidade de referência, os valores de contagem de células TCD4+ variaram de 719 a 1151 células/ µl, TCD8+ de 579 a 897 células/µl e uma carga viral com maior valor de 51 cópias virais/ml, mas com resultados indetectáveis na maioria dos testes realizados. O relato do portador de HIV de longa data não progressor com idade superior a 80 anos é um tanto incomum, considerando as alterações fisiológicas/imunológicas que ocorrem com o processo de envelhecimento concomitante à infecção pelo HIV.


Mujer de 81 años, infectada por VIH no progresor de larga evolución, asintomática, no usuaria de TAR, con seguimiento clínico de siete años en una unidad de referencia, los valores de recuento de células TCD4+ oscilaron entre 719 y 1151 células/ µl, TCD8+ de 579 a 897 células/µl y una carga viral con mayor valor de 51 copias virales/ml pero con resultados indetectables en la mayoría de las pruebas realizadas. El reporte de portadores de VIH no progresores a largo plazo mayores de 80 años es algo inusual, considerando los cambios fisiológicos/inmunitarios que ocurren con el proceso de envejecimiento concomitante con la infección por VIH.

ABSTRACT

A ingestão de bebidas alcoólicas é um evento socioculturalmente aceito em muitos países. Porém, o consumo frequente e descontrolado deste tipo de bebida configura o transtorno por uso de álcool (TUA). Esta condição causa agravos que podem afetar a sociedade de uma forma geral. O TUA também pode levar os pacientes a contraírem doenças. Entre estas, existe uma relação importante entre TUA e doenças infectocontagiosas, com destaque para a infecção pelo HIV e o posterior desenvolvimento da AIDS. Portanto, a presente pesquisa objetivou realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre as relações entre TUA e HIV/AIDS. A seleção do material científico foi efetuada tendo por base plataformas eletrônicas, tais como: Google Scholar, MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, NCBI / PUBMED, Scopus e Science Direct. O entendimento dos fatores relacionados ao TUA, principalmente em pacientes com HIV/AIDS, é de fundamental importância para a formulação e criação de estratégias de políticas públicas que visem reduzir esta possível relação (AU)


The ingestion of alcoholic beverages is socio-culturally accepted in many countries. However, frequent and uncontrolled consumption of this type of beverage constitutes alcohol use disorder (AUD). This condition may be harmful to society in general, and it can lead patients to contract other diseases. There is an important relationship between AUD and infectious diseases, with emphasis on HIV infection and the later development of AIDS. Therefore, the present research aimed to carry out a review of the literature on the relationship between AUD and HIV/AIDS. The selection of the scientific material was based on electronic platforms, such as Google Scholar, MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, NCBI/ PUBMED, Scopus and Science Direct. The understanding of the factors related to AUD, especially in patients with HIV/AIDS, is of fundamental importance for the formulation and creation of public policy strategies aimed at reducing this possible relationship (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Variations in human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) proviral load (PVL) in infected individuals over time are not well understood. Objective: To evaluate the evolution of proviral load in asymptomatic individuals and HAM/TSP patients in order to help determine periodicity for measuring proviral load. METHODS: A group of 104 HTLV-1 infected patients, followed at the HTLV reference center in Salvador, Brazil, were included in the study (70 asymptomatic and 34 HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) patients). HTLV-1 PVL was measured using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) at baseline and again at another point, either < 12 months, between 12-24 months, or > 24 months. RESULTS: HAM/TSP patients had higher PVL (ranging from 11,041 to 317,009 copies/10(6) PBMC) when compared to asymptomatic individuals (ranging from 0 to 68,228 copies/10(6) PBMC). No statistically significant differences were observed in the medians of PVL in HAM/TSP patients or asymptomatic individuals over time. However, in asymptomatic individuals with a PVL below 50,000 copies/10(6) PBMC, a statistically significant two-fold increase was observed over time. CONCLUSION: HTLV-1-PVL remained stable in both asymptomatic individuals and HAM/TSP patients over time. Frequent monitoring of asymptomatic individuals with low PVLs is recommended and further studies should be conducted to assess the course of PVL in these patients over extended periods of time.
